Judge Refuses to Ban Virtual Gambling Machines from Small Australian Town
A town in Australia has lost its fight to keep out virtual online casino gambling machines.
The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) over- ruled theVictorian Commission for Gambling Regulation’s decision to allow a ban of virtual online casino gambling machines in the small town of Drouin, in Gippsland.
The VCAT president, Justice Stuart Morris, said that Drouin was not a disadvantaged area. There was no justification, he said, for banning virtual online casino gambling machines in Drouin when they are permitted in all other cities in the region.
“If additional gaming machines are not appropriate in Drouin, how could 30,000 gaming machines be regarded as appropriate in Victoria?” Justice Morris asked.
Justice Morris added that the machines would bring benefits to the small town, pop. 6,000. The availability of local gambling, he said, would bring money to the community and decrease traffic on local roads since gamblers would not have to travel. The nearest gambling machines are located six kilometers away in Warragul.
The virtual online casino gambling machines in question are located at the Drouin Family Hotel, which has 20 machines. Annual gambling losses from these machines are expected to be around the $1.5 million mark.

Louisiana Truck Stops Feature Virtual Casino Machines
In addition to seaside casino resort complexes in the Gulf Coast and other areas, Louisiana also has a booming virtual casino business at restaurants, bars, and truck stops throughout the state.
Indeed, more than 150 Louisiana truck stops offer virtual casino machines for poker and other games. Truck stops are allowed to have from 35 to 50 machines, based on a variety of factors including their customer flow and fuel sales. Bars and restaurants, in contrast, are allowed up to three virtual casino machines.
Although business is undoubtedly booming, the truck stop virtual casino industry is not without its controversies.
Truck stops that seek to add virtual casino machines must subject themselves to a background check and an investigation by the Louisiana State Police and Attorney General’s office. The same is the case for any other business that wants to add a machine.
However, the truck stops must take in additional step in the virtual casino machine licensing process: they must make an appearance before the Louisiana Gaming Control Board monthly meeting, at which the authorities describe their “suitability.â€
Alton Ashey, an advocate for the truck stop virtual casino machine industry called the additional review “theatrics.†He said that the month-long delay until the board approves projects simply unnecessarily deprives the businesses and state and local governments of revenue.
