Judge Refuses to Ban Virtual Gambling Machines from Small Australian Town
A town in Australia has lost its fight to keep out virtual online casino gambling machines.
The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) over- ruled theVictorian Commission for Gambling Regulation’s decision to allow a ban of virtual online casino gambling machines in the small town of Drouin, in Gippsland.
The VCAT president, Justice Stuart Morris, said that Drouin was not a disadvantaged area. There was no justification, he said, for banning virtual online casino gambling machines in Drouin when they are permitted in all other cities in the region.
“If additional gaming machines are not appropriate in Drouin, how could 30,000 gaming machines be regarded as appropriate in Victoria?” Justice Morris asked.
Justice Morris added that the machines would bring benefits to the small town, pop. 6,000. The availability of local gambling, he said, would bring money to the community and decrease traffic on local roads since gamblers would not have to travel. The nearest gambling machines are located six kilometers away in Warragul.
The virtual online casino gambling machines in question are located at the Drouin Family Hotel, which has 20 machines. Annual gambling losses from these machines are expected to be around the $1.5 million mark.

Hotline for Casino Games Addictions
In an effort to shed its goody- goody image and attract scores of big- spending tourists, Singapore decided last year to legalize casino games. However, the small city- state of Singapore is beginning to see some of the possibly not- so- pretty consequences of its intended plan.
A hotline for those with addictions to casino games and other forms of gambling was set up by the charitable organization Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society (THKMS) and manned by the Tanjong Pagar Family Service Centre. The problem gambling hotline received 82 calls in its first week of operation.
Of the callers, 17 had contacted the hotline to seek help for an addiction to casino games or other forms of gambling such as sports- betting. An additional 23 people called to ask for help in warding off loan sharks. All of the gamblers were Chinese, and all but three were male.
Of the remaining callers, 20 said that they were friends or relatives of someone who is addicted to casino games or other gambling forms.
If all goes as planned, Singapore will have its own casino games centers, located in luxury integrated resorts, within three years.
